When RSPCA Inspectors found Cruze he was scared and alone in a filthy garage with no food or water. Dr Kiki, RSPCA Victoria's Welfare & Inspectorate Vet, said he probably hadn’t had proper access to food for months.

Cruze was found in a share house where six people were living. Everyone assumed someone else would take care of him. In the end, nobody did. And it showed.

When he arrived, Cruze’s body condition was at the lowest number on the scale,” says Dr Kiki, who has been examining and treating cases of cruelty and neglect for over 12 years. “His bones were showing through, and he had almost no fat on him.”

There were other signs of neglect too. Cruze had been living in filthy conditions,  so his skin was dirty and infected. He was dehydrated and infected with a parasite that showed just how unhealthy he had become and how dirty his living conditions had been.

Dr Kiki, who has been working at the RSPCA for over 12 years, said that Cruze was one of the thinnest dogs she had ever seen.

He was so starved that it wasn’t even safe to give him regular meals straight away.

When a dog hasn’t had proper nutrition for so long, their metabolism can’t cope if you feed them too much too quickly. So we had to slowly reintroduce food, or he could have died.

Preparing an animal for a new home can be as simple as a flea treatment, microchipping, and a few weeks food and shelter. But in many cases, it can be incredibly complex and expensive

Despite everything he’d been through, beautiful Cruze clearly just wanted to be loved. He won over the hearts of everyone at the shelter as he was slowly reintroduced to food, and treated for his infections.

Thanks to generous supporters like you, Cruze got the care he needed to gain weight and return to full health, ready for a family to fall in love with him too.

I’m happy to tell you that, after 60 days in RSPCA’s care Cruze gained over 7.5kg and he found his fur-ever family.

Now, instead of being left alone and hungry in a filthy garage, he can be found snuggled up on the couch or enjoying a car ride to get his favourite puppy-cino.

But there are still far too many innocent animals like him, stuck in situations where they are unloved and uncared for. Last year, 35% of animals seized from dangerous conditions were dogs and puppies.

Together, we can give them the care they need and the love they deserve.
